If you have a Kindle Paperwhite, you may have noticed small portions of underlined text while you’re reading. This feature, called “Popular highlights”, appears on lines that many users have highlighted themselves. It’s a nice idea – in most cases these are notable comments, and highlighting the line makes sure you pay a bit of notice to an important moment. Sometimes though, you want to give a story your full attention – now, seemingly random sentences being underlined is more jarring than helpful. How do I turn it off?

It’s a relatively easy process when you know where to go. Unfortunately, Amazon have decided that the settings that affect your reading should not go in “Reading options”, or even in the Settings page at all, which makes the process slightly less intuitive.

  1. First, open whichever book you’re currently reading, and tap in the upper middle of the screen. This will bring up the book options overlay.
  2. Now tap on the “Aa” button. This will open the settings that pertain to the themes, fonts, and layout.

  1. From here, navigate to the “More” tab. This is where you’ll find most of the quality of life options. There are a couple of interesting settings, like “Word Wise”, but what we’re really interested in is that Popular Highlights toggle.

  1. Simply tap on the slider to turn off Popular Highlights, and the problem is solved. You need never briefly connect with a community of like-minded readers ever again!

Conclusion

Highlighting the lines other readers think to be notable is a nice idea in theory, but can get annoying pretty quickly. Find out how to disable popular highlights on your Kindle Paperwhite with this guide!
