UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — CBD Kratom planted roots last week on the Upper West Side with the soft opening of its new Upper West Side location.
The retailer is the largest privately-owned cannabis and kratom chain in the United States. It opened Friday at 2039 Broadway (between 70th and 71st Street.)
The store will have its grand opening on Dec. 10.
Here’s a brief explanation of what Kratom is:
- Kratom is a tree that grows naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
- There haven’t been many studies on the Kratom, but doctors believe it can attach itself “to the same parts of a nerve cell as opioid painkillers and create a similar effect in your brain,” according to WebMD.
- “It has different effects at different doses. In low doses, it’s a stimulant that makes you feel more energetic. At high doses, it can make you sleepy or put you in a dreamlike state,” reads WebMD.
- There are no FDA-approved uses for Kratom.
CBD Kratom already has locations open in Chelsea, the Flatiron District, Times Square and the Upper East Side.
Ocean Cohen, the company’s director of retail growth and development, said that the Upper West Side is an “ideal neighborhood” for its expansion.
“The iconic Upper West Side is an ideal neighborhood for us as we continue our expansion in New York City,” Cohen said in a news release. “Adding THC-O to our product line along with a store in the Upper West Side allows us to connect with even more people looking for wellness solutions. The neighborhood has a relaxed vibe and customers will find the same welcoming atmosphere inside our store.”
CBD Kratom opened its first store in 2016 and now has 47 locations across the United States.
The company offers more than 600 different kinds of cannabis products.
“Growing our New York City footprint is critical and the Upper West Side provides us with a significant boost in reach and visibility,” Cohen added in the news release. “It is a diverse neighborhood that attracts a high volume of people and we look forward to introducing ourselves and our products to them.
