The COVID vaccines that are currently being administered across the U.S. offer a high degree of protection to anyone who receives both doses—95 percent protection, to be exact. Now, the nearly 20 million Americans who’ve already gotten both of their shots are wondering when they might be able to return to some of the everyday activitiesthey enjoyed pre-pandemic. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may soon release guidance on the topic, chief White House COVID adviser Anthony Fauci, MD, says that, from his perspective as an 80 year old, there are some things that remain too risky, even after being fully vaccinated. Read on to see where the top infectious disease expert draws the line, and for more on what he thinks is OK to start doing again, check out Dr. Fauci Just Confirmed You Can Do This After Getting Vaccinated.

1 Dining out

The early days of the pandemic made it incredibly hard to eat at your favorite local restaurant. But even as indoor dining restrictions have been lifted across much of the U.S., Fauci admits that he is still holding back from eating out on the town, instead choosing to support local businesses by placing plenty of to-go orders. “I still do not do dining …  I still do takeout,” Fauci told Washington D.C.’s local NBC affiliate WRC-TV. “I want to continue to support the restaurants in my neighborhood that I would normally go to.”

He added, “We could cook at home every night, but we just go out deliberately to get takeout, at least a few times a week, maybe more.” And for more on COVID risk factors, check out If You’ve Done This Recently, You’re 70 Percent More Likely to Get COVID

2 Flying.

For many, being able to take to the skies again is one of the top reasons they want to be vaccinated as quickly as possible. But even after receiving both of his doses, Fauci says that traveling isn’t in the cards for him—especially if it involves boarding a flight. “Not yet, for a number of reasons,” he said of travel. “You know, I’m at the age that’s still at a pretty high risk.” And for more on what to avoid between doses, check out Dr. Fauci Says Don’t Do This After Your First COVID Shot.

3 Gathering with non-vaccinated people outside his household

Fauci admits that he and his wife keep what happens in their home “very restricted” in terms of guests and visitors, saying they’re still “very careful.”

“If we have someone in the house that would be a non-occupant of the house, it’s somebody that we know has either been vaccinated or tests themselves very, very frequently,” he told WRC-TV. And for more COVID news sent right to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.

4 Grocery shopping during peak hours

As a crowded indoor space filled with the everyday essentials you need, grocery stores have proven to be one of the more difficult venues to navigate throughout the pandemic. And with highly contagious variants now spreading across the U.S., some experts have advised that it’s best to limit your time spent shopping, wear a properly fitted mask (or double mask), or choose curbside pickup or delivery whenever possible to stay safe.

But when you shop can also help mitigate risk. Fauci told WRC-TV that he limits his trips to the grocery store and never goes during peak hours, usually choosing to shop early in the morning instead.
