Bloomberg pictorial on how Black Friday became the essence of consumerism

Anyone who needs a replacement gidget or who buys holiday gifts or simply likes getting excellent prices on consumables pays attention to Black Friday sales. The period now stretches from Thanksgiving thru the following Monday (occasionally referred to as Cyber Monday) with details of deals increasingly available far earlier. It’s been many years since I went physically to any store for a sale — who needs those crowds? — but sometimes the only way to get a loss leader or to buy clothes that come in sizes is to be there. This essay and its photos does a good job of explaining the history of this event.
