One Is the Loneliest Number
By Ann-Marie Alcántara
I’ve come close to losing my AirPods several times, whether it’s because I shove them in my pocket without a case, or walk too close to one of those infamous New York City grates. If I misplace one, I can either pay Apple about $89 to replace it—or I can look to my local Buy Nothing Facebook group to see if anyone has spare. That’s what the people I talked to recently did when they lost their AirPods exercising, running errands and going about their daily lives. They asked their neighbors for castoffs they had lying around. A little-known fact: Same-model AirPods from different sets can be paired together.Sometimes it worked seamlessly. But other people found themselves with AirPod mismatches, buds still tied to the original owner’s Apple ID and an earful of other problems. One person I spoke to said if he didn’t end up finding a spare AirPod through his neighbors, he probably would’ve bought a cheaper pair of non-Apple buds.As for me, if I lost an AirPod, I think I’d walk over to the Apple store and begrudgingly buy a totally new set. I wouldn’t want to have two AirPods that hold different charges. Replacing the battery isn’t really a solution either. But I would keep the lonely bud out of the landfill—just in case someone in my neighborhood needed it.—Ann-Marie is an internet culture reporter based in New York.
