These three are not Great Books dealing with Deep Matters nor do they include murders or other gross evil. Nor are they simple-minded. They’re simply books to read that will take you away from the news and your worries for a little while.
“The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivy
This is a retelling of a Russian fairy tale set in the real world of two families that are working to establish themselves in a remote part of Alaska.
“Jennie” or “The Abandoned” by Paul Gallico
One of my favorite books ever about a little boy who finds that he’s become a cat who has to fend for himself, until Jennie comes to help.
“A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman
A widower who has isolated himself gradually, and reluctantly, becomes part of the community. (Has been made into a movie that has the same tone.)
