It’s always a pleasure to see a victory in the continuing war against the exploration for, the production of, and the use of fossil fuels. In a world where records are being broken daily for climate affected data ranging from heat, drought, wildfires, glacier melting, the severity of storms, and flooding, a decision that supports the interests of the environment and the public is a joy.
In a decision on July 12, 2018, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) finally made its decision to deny the long-pending application from Houston-based gas company Crestwood Midstream to store liquefied petroleum gas in underground salt caverns under Seneca Lake.
This battle led by activists in the Finger Lakes area, particularly the group “Gas Free Seneca,” has been ongoing since the application was first made in 2009. Although Crestwood, according to filings with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, had already given up its dream, the DEC decision puts a final kibosh on the matter.
We at Food and Water Watch commend Gas Free Seneca and its compatriots in never giving up. Now to get Gov. Cuomo to take a strong position against all fracked gas infrastructure — including pipelines, plants and mobile bombs (carrying compressed gas through neighborhoods in trucks).
NOTE: As a volunteer for Food and Water Watch , I’ve been submitting letters to the editor on its behalf on current issues. This is one that was published.
