The Danskammer power plant along the Hudson River in the Town of Newburgh has been a continuing thorn in the side of the community, particularly those concerned about the future. The recent owners of the plant propose a new method to keep it operating as a fossil fuel-powered power source for the foreseeable future. This proposal must be rejected.
We cannot afford to do business as usual by approving a new or substantially expanded plant powered by natural (fracked) gas. Gov. Cuomo told Food and Water Watch organizer Laura Shindell that he would not approve any fracked gas plants in the future. This project fits squarely within the governor’s commitment. Moving to 100 percent renewable energy requires the governor to act affirmatively now. The Danskammer power plant proposal gives the governor the opportunity to act by stopping the project now, requiring that all government support and funding be diverted to the creation of an alternative approach that will use renewable fuel sources.
This action is only the first step. The governor must also immediately sign on to the bill pending in the New York legislature, and promoted by Food and Water Watch, that mandates a move to renewables. Specifically, he must now support the New York Off Fossil Fuels Act to switch to 100 percent renewable energy in New York by 2030.
NOTE: As a volunteer for Food and Water Watch , I’ve been submitting letters to the editor on its behalf on current issues. This is one that has been published.
